Parr anchors quartet of forwards

By Leader-Telegram staff

The 2000-01 All-City girls basketball team, unlike last season's version, has a familiar look to it.

Last season's seven-member squad had five first-time picks, and the other two players played different positions than in the previous season. Conversely the 2000-01 team has three repeat selections, and they're all forwards: 6-foot North senior Larissa Parr, 6-foot-1 Memorial senior Amanda Buchholz and 5-11 Regis sophomore Katie Ryan.

Rounding out the team are 5-9 Memorial senior Joanna Leafblad, 5-9 North senior Kricket Whyte, 5-9 Regis junior Tess Fanning and 5-6 Memorial sophomore Jess Huettl.

Parr, a third-time All-City selection, played the lead role in helping the Huskies to a 19-3 overall record and their first Big Rivers Conference title since 1993-94. She averaged 13.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game -- highlighted by a 36-point showing in North's 52-49 overtime win over Memorial on Dec. 8.

Buchholz averaged 9.9 points and a team-best 5.0 rebounds for the balanced Old Abes. She scored 13 points in a WIAA Division 1 state semifinal while matched against 6-2 Stevens Point forward Janel McCarville, The Associated Press' co-player of the year in the state.

Ryan averaged 10.8 points per game, second among the Lady Ramblers to Fanning's 13.2, in helping Regis to a 17-7 record -- a nine-win improvement over its 1999-2000 showing.

Leafblad and Huettl, the starting guards for Memorial (22-4), averaged 15.1 and 8.6 points per game, respectively. Huettl, who averaged 12.3 points per game during the Abes' seven games leading up to the state tournament, was in her first year as a starting point guard.

Whyte was the top defensive player for the Huskies and averaged 8.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.
