BY The Chippewa Herald SUPERIOR - The Chippewa Falls girls basketball team finished off Onalaska in the final game of the Superior tournament 55-32 on Friday, to capture the tournament championship. The Cardinals started the tournament off slowly, sneaking past Wisconsin Rapids 36-30, Thursday, in what head coach Jeff Olson called the Cardinals worst shooting performance of the year. "It was just one of those nights," Olson said. "We missed Natalie Licht. We are a much better team when she is with us. She will, hopefully, be back in early January." But the Cardinals bounced back, shooting 49 percent from the floor in the championship game. "We played better," Olson said. "Angie Ott was the key to this game. Onalaska was double teaming her all game, but the other kids got open and she got them the ball. "It was nice to not only have to score, but get a chance to feed the ball to everyone else," he said. Ott finished with 11 points and five assists to go along with her 15 points in the first game of the tournament. Sally Wellbourn led the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points, 12 in the second half. "Sally had a great half, and she played excellent defense all night," Olson said. "This may have been her best overall game this season. "I am pleased with the way the team played," he said. "Any time you hold a good team to 32 points, you have to be happy with the team defense." The tournament provided the Cardinals with some much needed wins, after suffering several tough losses. "You could tell the championship means a great deal to the girls," Olson said. "For some of these kids, it is the first time they have won a championship."
