Schroer center of attention

North backup hits clutch free throws in victory over Menomonie

MENOMONIE -- With Larissa Parr starting in front of her at center, Gretchen Schroer doesn’t get much of a chance to play for the Eau Claire North girls basketball team.

After Parr picked up her fourth foul against Menomonie on Friday night, however, Schroer came on and hit two big free throws as the Huskies held on for a 55-51 Big Rivers Conference win.

The Huskies (11-3, 16-4) closed the second quarter with a 10-0 run to go up 29-26 at halftime. But it was a 9-0 run by Menomonie (7-7, 8-12) late in the fourth quarter that set up the exciting finish.

Indians center Amanda Veith scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 rebounds.

North had three players score in double figures: Nicki Robinson with 15, Parr with 14 and Emilee Planert 12.

With the win, coupled with Eau Claire Memorial’s 49-43 loss to Hudson, the Huskies tied the Old Abes for second place in the eight-team Big Rivers standings.
